The Age of the Spirit

In this post I talk about a couple books and ask a few questions about the Holy Spirit. The late Phyllis Tickle wrote much late in life about the age of the church that we are coming to understand as the Great Emergence. The Great Emergence comes to us almost predictably as Tickle and many other historians and theologians have pointed out the pattern that it so neatly fits into. It is a pattern of a major shift in the way the church exists in the world that comes roughly every 500-years. These shifts have followed the coming of Jesus …

A Spiritual Practice for a Chaotic World

This post is about a spiritual practice for everyone called Sit Spot. Have you spent much time outside since the shutdown came? Maybe you’ve found more time for yard work or cleanup. Maybe your kids tried to dig a hole to China. Maybe you’ve taken more walks or runs than you used to. These are all great ways to get outside and move your body. I know I have loved the extra motivation to get out of the house and spend time in the other-than-human world of the meadows, creeks, forests, and trails that are so close to my neighbourhood. …

A reflection on Mike Tyson’s “Undisputed Truth”

This post is a reflection on my recent reading of Mike Tyson’s book, Undisputed Truth. During this pandemic, I have a lot more time for reading. It’s something I typically do a lot of anyway, but now I can get into some of my books that have been waiting for a time such as this. Last week I read the Undisputed Truth. It’s the autobiography of Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson is a polarizing dude. From the mean streets of Brownsville in Brooklyn, Tyson rose up to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion of boxing. He also became a convicted rapist …

Be What You Already Are

If you have had any contact with the high school students of LUMC and heard them share about what goes on in the youth group, you may have picked up the word ‘Gargon’. It’s a weird word. It’s like ‘Mormon’ but more pirate-y. If the word sounds a bit spooky, it should. A Gargon is a monster that lives in darkness devouring all who fall into its grip. Well okay, a Gargon is a teenager who chases other teenagers in the dark trying to tag them so they freeze in place. It’s a game. It’s fun. The object of Gargon …

One of My Favourite Resources

This is a really short post about a really great resource. One thing that always gets me when thinking about how our faith is how there are so many other people around the world and throughout history who have been navigating the vary same faith that you and I try to understand and live out everyday. That is a beautiful thing. That being said, we have to use our own critical thinking and knowledge of the scriptures when we encounter the thought of others. The internet is filled with bad theology, whacky preachers, and conspiratorial exegetes who can hurt our …

A note about encouragement

Hey all, Zach here. I just wanted to reflect for a second on the power of encouragement. I’m not an expert on the psychology of it and I don’t have any Greek or Hebrew words to share with you today, but I do have some experience. Last week was a hard week here at LUMC. The news about Vic being hospitalized hit us all pretty hard and required some fast adjustments we had not planned for. On top of that, everyday stressors are amplified by isolation and loss of routine. On Sunday, I came out pretty honest in my sermon. …

Deeper Bible Study for All Ages

In this post you’ll find some handy internet resources (and more) to enhance your study of the Bible. Good morning everyone, Zach here. As we’ve been adjusting to this new reality of quarantine and physical distancing I’ve noticed, as I’m sure many of you have, that there’s almost too much free time at home! Who would’ve thought? In this short period (which has felt pretty long) I’ve already lost interest in looking at screens. I tried to play a video game last night and it was about as exciting as scraping the bottom of a well-burnt pot! I wonder if …

Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3. Blogs Ahead.

Well hello everyone! Contrary to what the title suggests, this is not a test. Here at LUMC we are firing on all cylinders while we learn how to transition from relational, person to person pastors to operating on the internet for the foreseeable future. This blog is just one of the ways we will be bringing you content for reflection, spiritual growth, faith formation, inspiration, challenge, and hope. This is also a place where we will provide necessary community updates on how we’re all doing. We’ll be sure to let you know when a new post goes up on All …
